Tucumcari city

I recently made the move to Tucumcari, New Mexico, and wanted to share some of my thoughts about my new place of residence. To start with the basics, I am a 42-year-old automobile restoration technician, and I’ve found that Tucumcari's sense of history and connection to Route 66 is somewhat fitting for my line of work. There’s a unique charm in knowing that I’m living in a place that has been intimately tied to classic cars and the open road for decades.

Tucumcari is definitely a small city; the population hovers around 5,000 people. This translates to a close-knit community where everyone seems to know everyone else. As someone who came from a more bustling urban environment, it’s taken a bit of getting used to, but there are positives to this, particularly if you’re looking for a quieter, more laid-back pace of life. It’s definitely one of those towns where you can expect a wave and a smile from strangers.

One thing that stands out is the cost of living, which is noticeably lower than in many parts of the country. This certainly helps lighten the financial load and leaves more room for discretional spending or saving. Housing options are modest, and while Tucumcari boasts some charming, older homes, there is definitely a lack of newer developments. For someone in my profession, having space for a workshop is crucial, and I was fortunate enough to find a property that fits my needs in that respect.

The town's amenities are adequate but limited. There are a few grocery stores, some diners, and a couple of local shops, but anything beyond the basics requires a bit of a drive. For serious shopping, entertainment, or dining, you’ll likely be heading to a larger city. However, there are several noteworthy murals and landmarks scattered throughout the town, bringing a splash of color and history into everyday life.

As for the local job market, it's not exactly booming. My specialized skills in automobile restoration give me a bit of an edge, but it's relatively niche even here. That said, there are a few car enthusiasts around, and word-of-mouth has been effective for drumming up some business. The "old car" culture here is palpable, which can be a positive if you’re in a related industry or simply a fan of vintage vehicles.

Outdoor activities are plentiful, thanks to the expansive desert landscape. From hiking to star-gazing, you can find some truly beautiful and serene spots. On the downside, the weather can be quite extreme. Summers bring intense heat, and while winters aren’t brutal, they can be quite cold at night.

Healthcare facilities are present but small; for specialized medical needs or emergencies, being somewhat isolated could be a concern. I’ve taken it upon myself to ensure I have a good plan in case anything comes up.

All in all, time will tell how well Tucumcari suits me in the long run. In summary, if you're someone who relishes a tight-knit community, appreciates lower living costs, and enjoys the heritage of Route 66 with a bit of picturesque desert thrown in, Tucumcari has its own kind of understated appeal. Just be ready to make a few compromises on modern conveniences and job opportunities if you decide to call this place home.
