I've recently relocated to Soda Springs, Idaho from my previous coastal abode, and it has certainly been a change of pace. As a 44-year-old marine biologist, moving from a place where the ocean was a constant companion to a landlocked city has required some adjustment.

Firstly, the scenery here is breathtaking in a different way. Rather than seascapes, Soda Springs offers stunning mountain views and an abundance of outdoor activities that I’ve come to appreciate. The local hot springs are a unique feature of the area, offering a soothing retreat after a day of hiking or exploring the scenic trails. There's a sense of tranquility here that I hadn't fully appreciated before.

Professionally, the transition has been interesting. Marine biology isn't exactly a common profession around these parts, so I've had to adapt my research to focus more on freshwater ecosystems, which has broadened my scientific perspective. While there aren’t many marine biology opportunities directly in Soda Springs, I've found ways to stay connected with my coastal colleagues through remote work and occasional field trips.

The community here is close-knit and welcoming. I've attended several local events and festivals, which has been a nice way to integrate and meet new people. However, it’s a small town, so it doesn't have the same level of amenities and conveniences that might be found in a larger city. Grocery shopping and access to specialized goods sometimes mean a bit of a drive, but it's manageable.

One thing I miss dearly is the seafood. Fresh catches and coastal cuisine are scarce, which has motivated me to try my hand at new recipes and expand my culinary skills. It's been a fun challenge, although I do look forward to indulging in seafood when I travel.

Overall, Soda Springs has its charms and quirks. It's a slower, quieter way of life compared to the bustling coasts, which has its advantages and drawbacks. As someone who thrives on research and exploration, I've learned to appreciate the new environments and the different aspects of nature that Idaho presents. While it may not be my forever home, it’s been a valuable experience living here and adapting to the distinct lifestyle it offers.
