Why Colorado?

Colorado stands out as a top choice for many looking to relocate. Known for its stunning natural beauty, the state offers a variety of landscapes – from the breathtaking Rocky Mountains to the serene Great Plains. It's an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, with endless opportunities for hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and more. Beyond the great outdoors, Colorado boasts a strong economy, a vibrant cultural scene, and a focus on health and wellness that is hard to match.

Lamar: Colorado's Hidden Gem

In the southeastern corner of Colorado, a city beckons to those seeking a quieter pace with all the benefits of a tight-knit community: Lamar. While it may not receive the attention of Denver or Boulder, Lamar offers a unique charm that has residents singing its praises. Below are some of the reasons why you might consider making Lamar your permanent home.

Small-Town Appeal

One of Lamar's most endearing qualities is its small-town atmosphere. Here, neighbors know each other by name and community events feel like big family gatherings. This sense of community support and togetherness makes Lamar not just a place to live, but a place to belong.

Economic Opportunities

Lamar's economy is on the rise, with a mix of agricultural, manufacturing, and entrepreneurial opportunities. The city is a hub for renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power, which holds promise for sustainable job growth and attracts those who are environmentally conscious.

Cultural Richness

The city is proud of its cultural offerings, from the Big Timbers Museum displaying local history, to the plethora of annual festivals celebrating everything from the city's agricultural heritage to its thriving arts scene. Lamar's residents cherish their culture, and you're invited to become part of it.

Outdoor Recreation

Even though it's nestled in the high plains, Lamar is far from disconnected from Colorado's legendary outdoor adventures. With proximity to John Martin Reservoir State Park, locals enjoy boating, fishing, and bird watching. The city is also a stone's throw from several wildlife refuges, providing serene spots for nature walks and picnics.

Quality of Life

Those who live in Lamar enjoy a high quality of life, with access to good schools, low crime rates, and an affordable cost of living. Housing is reasonably priced, making the dream of homeownership more attainable than in many other parts of Colorado.

I recently moved to Lamar, Colorado, after spending most of my professional life in larger, bustling cities. As a 59-year-old optometrist, the transition to a smaller community comes with its own set of unique adjustments and opportunities.

Lamar, nestled in the Southeastern part of Colorado, offers a respite from the frenetic pace of big city life. The town is small, with a population that allows for a close-knit community feeling. People here are friendly and often greet each other on the streets, which adds a personal touch that was sometimes missing in larger urban areas.

The landscape here is markedly different, characterized by vast plains and open skies that can be quite breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset. As an avid nature lover, I appreciate the proximity to several natural attractions and wildlife, which is ideal for weekend explorations and provides a wonderful backdrop to a quieter life.

From a professional standpoint, Lamar presents an interesting dynamic. The community is smaller, and therefore the demand for specialized healthcare services, including optometry, isn't as vast as in larger cities. This has required some adjustment in terms of the scale of my practice. However, the advantage is that it allows for a more personalized approach to care, giving me the opportunity to really get to know my patients and their needs.

On the downside, because Lamar is relatively remote, access to some of the more advanced medical facilities and specializations is limited. For certain cases, referrals to facilities in larger cities like Denver are necessary, which can be inconvenient for some of my patients.

Culturally, Lamar is quite homogenous, and while it offers some local charm, it lacks the cultural diversity and range of dining and entertainment options found in larger cities. This can be a bit of a drawback when you’re used to more variety.

Overall, moving to Lamar has been a positive experience, though it comes with its challenges. The pace of life here is slower, which has given me a lot of time to reflect and appreciate the smaller things, but at times, I miss the vibrancy and options of a larger city. It’s a trade-off, but one that, on balance, suits where I am in my life right now.
