I've recently relocated to Holdenville, Oklahoma, and I'd like to share my thoughts on the city as a new resident. At 56 years old and working as an occupational therapist, my perspective is influenced by both professional and personal experiences here.

The pace of life here is slower compared to metro areas, which can be both a blessing and a challenge, depending on what one is looking for. The community is tight-knit, and people are generally friendly and welcoming. This is a place where you can still receive a warm greeting from strangers on the street, and it's not uncommon to run into familiar faces wherever you go.

One aspect I appreciate is the ease of getting around. Traffic is practically non-existent compared to larger cities, making commutes short and stress-free. This is a huge advantage in my profession, as it allows me to make home visits to clients with minimal hassle. Additionally, parking is never an issue anywhere in Holdenville, which is a relief after years of battling congested city streets and expensive parking.

In terms of amenities, Holdenville has the basics covered. There are a few grocery stores, some local restaurants, and a couple of parks that are adequate for daily needs and light recreation. However, if you are looking for a wide variety of shopping, dining, or entertainment options, you might find yourself traveling to larger nearby cities like Ada or even Oklahoma City.

Healthcare facilities here are limited but seem competent for day-to-day health concerns. For more specialized medical needs, one would need to travel to a regional hospital. Professionally, the smaller healthcare setting means you get to know your patients well and can often work more closely with them, which has been quite rewarding. That said, opportunities for professional growth and continuing education are fewer, requiring some travel for workshops and seminars.

The cost of living is relatively low, which was a significant factor in my decision to move here. Housing, whether renting or buying, is affordable compared to national averages. This makes it easier to maintain a comfortable lifestyle without the financial pressures of more expensive locales.

As for the natural surroundings, Holdenville is not without its charms. There are beautiful, expansive landscapes and plenty of outdoor activities like fishing and hiking, especially near Holdenville Lake. These natural retreats provide a lovely escape and a way to unwind away from the hustle and bustle.

That said, Holdenville does have its downsides. The slower pace and limited amenities mean that it lacks the vibrancy and cultural variety that some might crave. If you enjoy a bustling night life or a plethora of cultural events, you might find the city lacking. Additionally, the public education options are somewhat limited, which might be a consideration for those with school-aged children.

In summary, Holdenville is a mixed bag, offering a quiet, affordable lifestyle with a strong sense of community but limited in terms of amenities and professional opportunities. For someone in my stage of life and career, it's a peaceful place to call home, but it's important to weigh these pros and cons to see if it matches your personal and professional needs.
