I've recently moved to Beaufort, North Carolina, and thought I'd share my initial thoughts after settling in for a few months. At 55 and working as an actuary, I was looking for a place with a balance of tranquility and convenience, and Beaufort seems to offer a mix of both.

To begin with, Beaufort's historical charm is quite striking. The town is small and has a distinctively quaint atmosphere with its coastal charm. Walking down Front Street, with its picturesque views of the waterfront, has become one of my favorite pastimes. The area is rich in maritime history, and you can feel a sense of the past embedded in the old homes and buildings, giving it a unique character which I appreciate, especially given my interest in history.

In terms of amenities, Beaufort is fairly modest. There are a few local restaurants and shops which give it a tight-knit community feel. However, for someone used to a metropolitan lifestyle, the selection can feel limited, especially when it comes to dining options and shopping. I often find myself having to drive to nearby Morehead City for a more extensive selection, which isn't a big hassle, but something to note if convenience is a priority.

Work-life balance here is quite superb. The slower pace of life and the peaceful surroundings make for a less stressful environment. As an actuary, I spend a lot of time deep in numbers and probabilities, and having the waterfront so close serves as a great stress reliever. The ability to walk by the water during breaks or after work has truly been a blessing.

Community-wise, people are generally friendly and welcoming. There's a palpable small-town vibe where everyone seems to know each other, which can be heartwarming but also takes some getting used to if you're from a larger city. It’s nice to be greeted by name at the local coffee shop or to have neighbors who are keen to strike up a conversation.

One thing I've had to adjust to is the slower pace and limited public transport. If you’re someone who relies heavily on public transportation, Beaufort might pose some challenges. A car is almost a necessity here, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding areas or need to commute for work.

Overall, Beaufort offers a serene and historic setting that is quite appealing. While it may lack some of the conveniences of larger cities, its charm lies in its simplicity and community spirit. It might not be for everyone, but for someone looking for a quieter life tucked away in a scenic town, it's worth considering.
