Reviews
I recently moved to Flatwoods, Kentucky, and it's been an interesting adjustment. As a 40-year-old Information Security Specialist, I was used to a faster-paced life in a larger city, so this small-town atmosphere has taken some getting used to.
Flatwoods is a quiet, tight-knit community. The people here are friendly, often greeting you with a smile or a wave. It's a nice change from the anonymity of a big city. However, the pace of life is decidedly slower. This has its pros and cons. On one hand, there's less stress and a sense of tranquility that's hard to find in a bustling metropolis. On the other hand, it can sometimes feel like there's not much to do.
When it comes to local amenities, Flatwoods is pretty basic. There are a few grocery stores, some diners, and essential services like banks and post offices. For anything beyond that, you have to drive to a larger nearby city, which can be a bit inconvenient. The local restaurants offer decent food but don't expect a wide variety of cuisines. I miss the diverse food scene from my previous residence.
One of the biggest adjustments has been the shift in the job market. As an Information Security Specialist, I'm fortunate to have the flexibility to work remotely. However, if you're in a tech-related field, local opportunities are few and far between. Networking events and tech meetups are almost non-existent here, so staying connected with the industry requires more effort.
Connectivity and infrastructure are areas where Flatwoods could improve. Internet speed is decent but not impressive, and it's crucial for my work to have a reliable connection. Cell signal can be spotty in certain areas, which has been a bit frustrating.
On the housing front, affordability is a huge plus. The cost of living here is significantly lower, and you get more space for your money compared to larger cities. My new home is spacious with a decent-sized yard, which is great for my family. The trade-off is that the property market here moves slowly, so selling or renting out can take time if you decide to leave.
Overall, Flatwoods is a peaceful place with a strong sense of community, ideal for someone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. However, for a tech professional used to the conveniences and opportunities of a larger city, it might feel a bit limiting. This move has required some adjustments but has also brought a sense of calm and affordability that’s quite refreshing.
