Having recently moved to Blackshear, Georgia, I’m finding this small city to be a mixed bag of experiences. At 70, having spent the majority of my life in more bustling urban settings, the pace and landscape here have certainly been an adjustment.

One of the first things I noticed about Blackshear is its quintessential Southern charm. The streets are lined with beautiful, mature trees and historic homes that exude a sense of timelessness. There’s a simplicity to life here that feels grounding, though it can also feel a bit isolating at times given the slower pace compared to busier cities.

The community has been friendly and welcoming, which is a plus. Neighbors here actually take the time to chat and get to know each other, a refreshing change from my experience in larger cities where everyone seems perpetually rushed. However, being a programmer and software developer, I’ve found the local tech community to be quite limited. This is a small town, after all, and high-tech job opportunities and industry events are scant. This might not be an issue for someone who’s retired or pursuing less tech-dependent hobbies, but for me, it’s a bit of a drawback.

The local amenities are adequate but basic. Groceries, healthcare, and other necessities are easily accessible, but the selection is limited. I miss the variety and specialty stores of larger metropolitan areas. On the plus side, Savannah, Jacksonville, and other larger cities are within a reasonable driving distance, providing access to a broader range of services and entertainment options when needed.

Public transportation here is almost non-existent, so having a vehicle is essential. For someone my age, this is a minor inconvenience but manageable. On the flip side, the roads are far less congested, making driving a far more pleasant experience compared to the gridlock common in bigger cities.

Nature and outdoor activities are a highlight. Blackshear is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the nearby Okefenokee Swamp offers recreational opportunities like kayaking and bird watching. If you enjoy the outdoors, it’s a definite perk.

In summary, Blackshear, Georgia, offers a serene and friendly environment that would likely appeal to those seeking a quieter life. For a 70-year-old programmer like myself, the lack of a vibrant tech scene and limited amenities are notable downsides. However, the overall experience isn’t negative—it’s just a significant shift from what I was accustomed to. If one is prepared for a slower pace and can overlook some of the limitations, Blackshear’s charm and community spirit might just win them over.
