I recently relocated to Erie, Pennsylvania, and as a healthcare scientist aged 55, I find myself experiencing a mixture of emotions about this new chapter. Erie is a city with a lot of character and history, but like any place, it comes with its own set of pros and cons.
Starting with the positives, Erie is nestled along the shores of Lake Erie, which offers a beautiful backdrop and some stunning sunsets. Presque Isle State Park is a gem for nature enthusiasts like myself, providing ample opportunities for walking, bird-watching, and even relaxing by the water. The community here also feels tight-knit, and people are generally friendly and welcoming, which has made the transition easier.
Erie's cost of living is relatively low compared to other cities in the United States, which was a significant factor in my decision to move. Housing is affordable, and I was able to find a comfortable home without breaking the bank. The city also has a reasonable selection of amenities, including grocery stores, healthcare facilities, and local restaurants, which cover the essentials well.
On the downside, the job market in Erie is somewhat limited, especially for specialized professions like healthcare science. While I was fortunate to secure a position, I could see how it might be challenging for others in my field.
