Reviews
I recently moved to Lake Mills, Wisconsin, and I'd say it's been an interesting transition. As a 33-year-old electrical engineer, my professional life has always been pretty structured, and relocating was a significant change. Lake Mills is a cozy, small city that has both its charms and challenges.
One of the first things I noticed about Lake Mills is its natural beauty. Rock Lake is a cornerstone of the community, and it's genuinely picturesque. I’ve taken a few walks around the lake after work, and it’s a great way to unwind. There’s an undeniable sense of tranquility being so close to water and nature. The local parks, especially Commons Park, are well-maintained and a nice spot for a casual weekend.
On the flip side, moving from a larger city, I’ve found that Lake Mills lacks some of the conveniences I was used to. The dining and shopping options are limited. There are a handful of decent restaurants and cafes, but nothing particularly stands out. If you’re someone who enjoys a wide array of culinary experiences or is used to shopping malls and large retail stores, you might feel a bit restricted here.
Socially, it’s a mixed bag. The community is tight-knit, and people are generally friendly, but it can be a bit challenging to break into established social circles. I’ve met a few fellow professionals through local meetups, which has been great for networking, but the social scene is fairly quiet. There aren’t many events or nightlife options, so if you thrive on an active social life, you might find it quieter than expected.
From a professional perspective, Lake Mills is fairly close to larger cities like Madison and Milwaukee, which is a plus. The commute isn’t too bad, and it opens up more opportunities for work and professional development. However, being an electrical engineer here can feel somewhat isolating since the town doesn’t have a strong tech or engineering industry presence. Most of my professional interactions still happen online or during trips to larger cities.
Overall, Lake Mills is a pleasant, if not a bit sleepy, place to live. The natural surroundings are a significant perk, and it’s a peaceful environment which can be very refreshing. However, the trade-off is the limited amenities and slower social pace. It’s a decent spot if you’re looking to enjoy a quieter, more nature-centric lifestyle, but it might not suit everyone, especially if you’re coming from a more urban, bustling environment.
