I've recently moved to Wichita, Kansas, and I've had a mixed experience so far. As a 66-year-old data analyst, I was seeking a place that balances both tranquility and a bit of urban bustle. Wichita, it turns out, offers a curious blend of both.
Firstly, the cost of living here is quite reasonable, which is a notable relief compared to some other cities I've considered. Housing, in particular, is affordable, and I've managed to find a cozy home that fits my needs perfectly. The pace of life seems slower, which has been a wonderful change of pace.
Wichita has some lovely parks and green spaces, which I appreciate for my daily walks. Exploring the Arkansas River Trail has become one of my favorite activities; it provides a peaceful environment and a chance to appreciate Kansas' natural beauty. The city's botanical garden, Botanica, is also a real gem and a perfect spot for quiet contemplation.
On the flip side, public transportation here is not as robust as I had hoped. While I do drive, it's occasionally inconvenient not to have more extensive public transport, especially as I plan ahead for when I might prefer not to drive as much. The city's layout pretty much necessitates a car to get around efficiently.
Professionally, finding a strong community or network within data analytics has been somewhat challenging. While Wichita has a growing tech scene, it's still relatively small and finding peers and professional events is a bit more effort than it would be in a larger city. However, when I do find relevant meetups or workshops, the people are welcoming and the community spirit is strong.
In terms of amenities, Wichita has its fair share of dining options and cultural activities. The Old Town district is quite charming, with a variety of restaurants, bars, and some interesting shops. The Mid-America All-Indian Center and the Wichita Art Museum are valuable cultural points that offer a taste of local history and art.
Healthcare services are quite satisfactory. There are several healthcare facilities and specialists available, which is reassuring as I get older. However, sometimes specialized care may require travel to nearby larger cities which could be a bit of a hassle.
In conclusion, Wichita is a city of contrasts for me. It's affordable and offers a laid-back lifestyle with access to nature, which I deeply appreciate. At the same time, there are certain limitations, especially regarding public transport and the professional scene. Nonetheless, I'm embracing the change and looking forward to seeing how I can make the most of this new chapter in my life.
