As a marine biologist, moving to West Des Moines, Iowa, initially seemed far from the oceanic research scenes I am accustomed to. However, this city has pleasantly surprised me with its vibrant community and ample green spaces providing a serene and refreshing environment. Adapting to a landlocked location, I’ve discovered new avenues for research and public engagement around local water bodies and conservation efforts.

The community here in West Des Moines is exceptionally welcoming. People are friendly, there is a genuine sense of neighborhood camaraderie, and the local amenities are outstanding. I love the variety of shops and restaurants, and there’s always something happening—be it a farmers market, festival, or live music event.

For recreation, the extensive network of trails and parks offers a great escape into nature, which is fantastic for both my personal downtime and active lifestyle. The schools here are well-regarded, which I’ve heard from my colleagues is a big plus for families.

Overall, West Des Moines has proven to be a delightful place with a balanced mix of urban and natural attractions, making it a perfectly surprising new home for a seafaring scientist like myself!
