Glencoe village

I recently moved to Glencoe Village in Illinois, and I'd like to share a balanced review of my experience so far. As a 37-year-old nanotechnology engineer, my perspective might be slightly different from that of others, particularly due to my professional and personal considerations.

Glencoe is a charming village located on the shores of Lake Michigan, about 20 miles north of Chicago. One of the immediate impressions you'll have is the natural beauty that surrounds you. The lakeside views, lush greenery, and the meticulously maintained parks like the Chicago Botanic Garden offer a refreshing escape from the urban hustle.

In terms of amenities, Glencoe does pretty well. There are a good number of local shops, boutiques, and some nice restaurants that give a quaint yet sophisticated vibe to the village. However, I did find the options somewhat limited compared to the vibrant variety in Chicago. For essential needs and a diverse range of activities, a trip to neighboring towns or the city is usually required.

Public transportation is fairly convenient with the Metra train providing a direct route to downtown Chicago. This is a big plus, especially for someone in a specialized field like mine. That said, the commute can be somewhat lengthy during peak hours, which is something to consider if you value your time.

The residential areas are mostly quiet and family-oriented. The community appears tight-knit with an emphasis on family activities and education. Speaking of which, the local schools have a strong reputation, which could be appealing for those with children. Safety is another strong point; I feel quite secure walking around the neighborhood at any time of the day.

However, Glencoe is not without its drawbacks. The cost of living is quite high, with property prices and rents reflecting the upscale nature of the community. This can be prohibitive, particularly if you're on a tighter budget. Additionally, while the village is generally inclusive, as a newcomer it can take a bit of time to break into established social circles.

Professionally, the commute to work in the wider Chicago area is manageable but not ideal. There are limited local opportunities in highly specialized fields like nanotechnology, so one has to rely on broader job markets in the area.

In summary, Glencoe Village is a picturesque and tranquil place with strong community values and excellent public amenities. It offers a high quality of life but at a cost. For families, particularly those with young children, it can be an ideal setting. However, for professionals who crave more immediate access to a bustling urban environment and greater job variety, the commute and limited local options can be a downside. As with any place, it comes with its set of pros and cons, but overall, Glencoe has a unique charm that can be quite endearing once you settle in.
